Dr. Robert J. Kossmann
Robert J. Kossmann, MD, FACP, FASN is the current Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for the Renal Therapies Group of Fresenius Medical Care North America. Rob transitioned to this role in July 2014 following a successful nephrology career in private practice from 1994 to 2014 in Santa Fe, New Mexico at Nephrophiles, LLC. In his current role with Fresenius Medical Care, the world’s largest manufacturer/supplier of dialysis equipment and products, as well as the world’s largest provider of dialysis services, Rob is intimately involved in device and drug innovation and development, and in evaluation of new devices and drugs with potential applications to patients with all levels of kidney function, across the spectrum of kidney diseases.
A former president of the RPA (Renal Physicians Association, 2013-2014), Rob has been a career-long advocate in US Public Policy, for nephrology patients’ access to care and quality of care, and for the nephrology profession, through the ESRD Network #15 MRB (Medical Review Board), the RPA’s NCAP (National Coverage Advisory Panel), RPA standing committees, and 12 years at the AMA RUC (Relative Value Update Committee). He is currently also active through KCP (Kidney Care Partners, a nephrology community advocacy group in Washington DC) and the KHI (Kidney Health Initiative, a public-private collaborative organization of the ASN and the FDA). Rob has also had regular interactions with patient advocates and patient advocacy groups, including the AAKP (American Association of Kidney Patients).
Closer to his home, in New Mexico, Rob founded the RDCG (Renal Disease Collaborative Group), an informal New Mexico nephrology organization that, after more than 15 years, continues to meet several times a year around pathology conferences and professional discussions. Continuing to live in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Rob’s personal life is focused around his wife and two daughters, and an active lifestyle in the out-of-doors. Hiking, visiting state and national parks, travel (both domestic and international), reading, beekeeping, and the love of activities that involve living things, round out Rob’s many interests as a person.
